St Barts Packing List 2026: What to Bring (and What to Leave Behind)

The inter-island flight into St. Barts has a 10–15kg luggage limit. Packing wrong is more than inconvenient — it can mean arriving without essentials or paying excess fees. This is the definitive packing list built around that constraint.

The Luggage Rule That Changes Everything

The inter-island propeller planes from Sint Maarten (SXM) to St. Barts (SBH) have a checked luggage limit of 10–15kg per passenger, depending on the operator. This is not negotiable and it is strictly enforced. Overweight bags either don’t fly or attract significant fees. Heavy, rigid suitcases are problematic — they may not fit in small cargo holds even if they’re underweight.

The solution: one soft-sided duffel or roll-top bag per person, packed to no more than 12kg. You can carry a small personal item (handbag, daypack) in addition. Everything else can be bought in Gustavia at duty-free prices, or provisioned to your villa before arrival through your concierge.

The St Barts Packing List

Clothing — Keep It Minimal
  • 3–4 swimwear pieces (the primary activity is beach and pool)
  • 2 beach cover-ups or light linen shirts
  • 2 evening outfits — resort casual, no formal wear needed
  • 1 light linen dress or trousers + shirt for fine dining
  • 1 pair sandals, 1 pair flip-flops, 1 pair comfortable walking shoes
  • Light layer for air-conditioned restaurants (evenings can feel cool indoors)
  • 1 sun hat with wide brim
Beach & Water Essentials
  • High-SPF reef-safe sunscreen (50+) — buy in Gustavia if needed, good duty-free prices
  • Quality sunglasses with UV protection
  • Snorkeling mask and fins if you have favourites (rentals available at most beaches)
  • Waterproof phone case or dry bag — especially for boat days
  • Quick-dry beach towel (villas and hotels supply towels, but useful for beach days)
Practical Essentials
  • Passport (required even for inter-Caribbean travel)
  • Euros in cash — ATMs available in Gustavia but useful to have some on arrival
  • International adapter (French plugs — Type E)
  • Prescription medications — the island’s pharmacy is limited
  • Reef-safe insect repellent for evenings
  • Reusable water bottle — tap water is drinkable, stay hydrated
What to Leave Behind
  • Heavy suitcases — use soft duffel bags only
  • Formal wear — St. Barts has no black-tie events for tourists
  • Multiple pairs of shoes — 2–3 pairs maximum
  • Books — your phone is enough
  • Most toiletries — Gustavia has excellent pharmacies and duty-free beauty
  • Hair dryer (most villas and hotels supply one)

What to Buy When You Arrive

Gustavia is duty-free. Perfume, sunscreen, wine, spirits, and luxury beauty products are significantly cheaper than mainland retail — often 20–30% below US prices. The Jojo Marché supermarket stocks excellent provisions if you’re in a self-catering villa. The pharmacy covers most essentials you might have forgotten.

Villa Provisioning

If you’re staying in a villa, your concierge can pre-stock the kitchen with your preferred groceries, wines, and essentials before you arrive. Provide a list 2–3 days ahead. This is the most efficient way to handle the luggage constraint — pack light, stock the villa with everything you need.

Packing for the Boat Day

If you’ve booked a day charter (strongly recommended), prepare a separate small dry bag with: reef-safe sunscreen, snorkeling mask, waterproof case for your phone/camera, a light layer for the return journey after sunset, and your swimwear. Most charter operators provide towels, snorkeling equipment, lunch, and drinks.
