20 Essential St Barts Travel Tips
- Book your rental car the same day you confirm accommodation. Reserve here. The island has a small fleet. Automatic transmissions sell out first.
- The inter-island luggage limit is 10โ15kg per person. Pack soft bags. Leave rigid suitcases at home or ship separately.
- There are no direct flights to St. Barts. All visitors fly into Sint Maarten (SXM) first. Allow at least 90 minutes for the connection.
- May is the best-value month. Same island, 40โ60% cheaper, beaches nearly empty on weekday mornings. Search May flights.
- Book restaurants before you arrive. The best tables at La Guรฉrite, Bonito, and Eden Rock go within hours of opening for bookings in peak season.
- The SBH airport landing approach is spectacular. The plane dives over a hill before landing on a short runway. Window seat on the left side for the best view.
- Jojo Marchรฉ supermarket is your friend. Excellent wine, cheese, charcuterie, and prepared food at a fraction of restaurant prices. Essential for villa stays.
- Duty-free is genuinely good. Hermรจs, Cartier, Bulgari, and perfume are 20โ30% cheaper than US/UK retail. Budget for shopping.
- The currency is euro. US dollars are accepted but at unfavourable rates. Withdraw euros from Gustavia ATMs.
- Roads are narrow and steep. Drive slowly, especially on the first day. The roads require respect โ they are beautiful and the scenery is distracting.
- A day charter to Colombier is the best day of any St. Barts trip. Non-negotiable. Book your charter here.
- Gouverneur Beach is the island’s most beautiful. Arrive before 9am on weekdays for the best experience. Worth the early start.
- Villa + private chef = the best dinner option. Many villas include or can arrange a private chef for โฌ150โโฌ300/person. Often better than any restaurant.
- The island has essentially no nightlife after 1am. This is a feature. You’re here for the mornings.
- Le Select bar is mandatory. Open since 1949. A beer costs โฌ5. Billionaires drink there. Go.
- Colombier is also reachable by a 30-minute hike from Petite Anse โ but only if you’re reasonably fit and it’s not raining. The boat is more reliable.
- The pharmacy in Gustavia is well-stocked. Don’t overload on medications โ the pharmacy has most standard needs covered.
- Tipping is not compulsory but appreciated. Service is typically included in restaurant bills. 5โ10% extra for excellent service is normal.
- New Year’s villas need to be booked 12 months ahead. If you’re reading this in January, book December now. Not next month โ now.
- The island is 21 square kilometres. You can drive from one end to the other in 20 minutes. There’s no such thing as being “too far” from anything.
1. Book your rental car immediately. 2. Pack to 12kg maximum. 3. Book a day charter. Everything else flows from those three.
