Private Jet to St Barts: Where to Land and How to Connect

You cannot fly a private jet to St Barts directly. Gustaf III Airport (SBH) in St. Jean, St. Barthélemy, has a single 646-metre runway, closes 15 minutes after sunset and only accepts pilots holding a special site certification, so business-jet travellers land at a nearby hub such as Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) on Sint Maarten and finish the trip on a short turboprop or helicopter hop.

The good news is that the final leg is quick — about 15 minutes from Anguilla, according to St Barth Commuter — and with the right timing a private jet to St Barts itinerary can still feel seamless. This guide explains the rules at SBH, the best gateway airports, how to time your connection before the airport closes and what to book in advance, as of October 2026.

Why a Private Jet Can’t Land at St Barts Airport

Gustaf III Airport — the official aeronautical name is Aéroport de Saint-Jean – Gustave III, code TFFJ/SBH — sits 800 metres northeast of Gustavia. According to the French civil aviation authority’s aeronautical publication (eAIP, AIRAC cycle of October 30, 2025), its only runway, 10/28, measures 646 × 18 metres of concrete. For comparison, the runway at Princess Juliana International Airport on Sint Maarten is 7,546 feet (about 2,300 metres) long, per Atlantic Aviation’s SXM page.

The eAIP reserves SBH for radio-equipped aircraft “with suitable performance” and lists aircraft stands referenced for the de Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otter and the Pilatus PC-12, plus helicopter stands. In practice that means small turboprops and helicopters, not business jets. Other key restrictions:

  • Restricted-use certification: under an order of January 14, 2025, aeroplane pilots need instructor-recognised training on their specific type or class, and must have flown as pilot in command at SBH within the previous six months.
  • Commercial operators need prior authorisation from the DSAC Antilles-Guyane, with a landing-performance demonstration filed two months ahead.
  • Daylight only: night landings are prohibited on both runway ends.
  • Wind limits: take-offs and landings stop above 25 knots of crosswind on a dry runway, or 20 knots when wet.
  • No fuel and no visitor hangars are available on the field.

This is why even owners who fly their own jet to the Caribbean switch aircraft for the final leg. Our full guide on how to get to St Barts by flight, ferry or private transfer covers the commercial options too.

Best Airports for a Private Jet to St Barts

Sint Maarten (SXM): the default choice

Most private jet passengers to St Barts clear into SXM. Atlantic Aviation’s SXM FBO lists ground handling, landing permits, quick-turn fuelling, customs and immigration coordination, catering and concierge help, with daily hours of 9:00 am to 6:00 pm (as of October 2026; confirm before you file). From SXM you can connect on a short turboprop flight, charter a helicopter or take a boat. Our St Martin to St Barth transfer guide compares every crossing.

San Juan and Antigua: by-the-seat luxury

Tradewind Aviation sells scheduled, by-the-seat flights to St Barts from San Juan and Antigua, with reservations open through April 2027 (Caribbean Journal, July 2026). Across its Caribbean network the airline flies eight-seat Pilatus PC-12s with two pilots, departs from private terminals and lounges, and has interline agreements with United, American, JetBlue and British Airways, with automatic bag transfer on San Juan connections (Private Jet Card Comparisons, July 2026).

Anguilla, Guadeloupe and beyond: on-demand charters

St Barth Commuter, a local airline operating since 1995, flies six Cessna 208B Grand Caravans and quotes charters to SBH from more than 30 Caribbean airports, including Anguilla, Antigua, Guadeloupe, San Juan and St. Thomas. Its published baggage allowance is 23 kg (50 lb) per checked bag and 12 kg (26 lb) in the cabin, and its high season runs November 15 to April 30.

Timing Your Private Jet to St Barts Connection

The single biggest planning rule: SBH opens at 1100 UTC (7:00 am local time) and closes 15 minutes after sunset. St. Barthélemy uses Atlantic Standard Time (UTC−4) all year. If your jet lands late at SXM, there is no night flight across — you will be staying on Sint Maarten.

Use this table to set your latest arrival at the gateway. Sunset times are calculated for SBH (17.904° N, 62.844° W) on the 15th of each month; leave at least 60–90 minutes for the transfer.

Holiday-season tipDecember sunsets are the earliest of the year, just as private traffic peaks for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Aim to be wheels-down at your gateway by early afternoon and pre-book the onward seat or charter.

Customs, Bags and Paperwork

  • Customs at SBH works on 24 hours’ prior notice: Monday to Friday 7:00 am–6:00 pm and Saturday 7:30 am–noon local time, per the eAIP. Your charter operator or handler normally arranges this.
  • Parking a visiting aircraft at SBH requires prior permission (PPR) 48 hours ahead by email to the airport, and departures before 7:00 am need a flight notice 24 hours ahead.
  • Pack soft bags. Turboprop holds are small; check each operator’s limits (St Barth Commuter allows 23 kg per checked bag).
  • Arrange your car before landing. Car rental agencies operate at the airport, and taxis are limited in peak season.

Once you land, most of the island is minutes away. Villa JSA, an ocean-view villa in Lurin above Gustavia, is about a five-minute drive from SBH — handy after a long travel day.

Land, Then Head Straight to Your Villa

Lock in your stay and wheels before the holiday rush — private arrivals peak from mid-December.
