Whale Watching in St Barts: Season, Rules & Best Spots

Whale watching in St Barts is mostly a shore-based pastime. Humpback whales pass St. Barthélemy between December and April, and because the island’s waters sit inside the Agoa marine mammal sanctuary, people and boats must stay at least 300 metres from any whale. For most visitors, the best chance of a sighting is a patient session with binoculars from a high coastal viewpoint.

That makes St Barts different from islands with a busy whale-tour industry. There is no queue of whale-watching boats in Gustavia Harbor, and the rules are strict. The upside: if you know when and how to look, you can watch a humpback blow or breach from a hillside, a villa terrace or the deck of an ordinary boat day, without disturbing the animals. This guide covers the season, the rules as of October 2026, where to look from land and what to do if a whale surfaces near your boat.

When Is Whale Season in St Barts?

St. Barthélemy’s Territorial Environment Agency (Agence Territoriale de l’Environnement, or ATE) states on its humpback whale information panel that humpbacks can be seen around the island from December to April. These whales spend the summer feeding in cold northern waters off Canada and northern Europe, then travel to the warm Caribbean to mate and give birth. Males sing during the breeding season, and their songs carry up to about 30 km underwater.

Humpbacks are not the only visitors. The same ATE panel notes that sperm whales have recently been detected around St Barts through hydrophone (underwater microphone) recordings, while dolphins are rarely seen. Across the wider Agoa sanctuary, which covers the waters of Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy, France’s Office for Biodiversity (OFB) counts 26 cetacean species.

PeriodWhat to expect in St Barts
December – AprilHumpback whale season around St. Barthélemy (ATE). Also the island’s high season, so book stays early.
MarchThe ATE has run a public “Whale Week” in March (the 2025 edition ran March 17–21), with talks and a land-based watching session.
May – NovemberOutside humpback season. Whale sightings are unlikely; other marine life and snorkeling take over.

Whale Watching Rules in St Barts (As of October 2026)

All of St Barts’ waters belong to the Agoa sanctuary, created in 2010 and covering about 143,256 km² of the French Antilles, according to the OFB. The sanctuary’s official regulation page and the ATE’s “On the water” visitor page set out the same core rules:

WhoClosest allowed approach
Everyone without Agoa training: boats, jet skis, paddleboards, swimmers, snorkelers, scuba divers300 metres
Drones and anything above the water300 metres (the rule applies above, on and below the surface)
Professionals trained by the Agoa sanctuary and holding an authorisation100 metres

Separately, the ATE sets a 5-knot speed limit within 300 m of the coast, in the harbor channel and anchorages, in the nature reserve’s bays and within 100 m of islets, to protect swimmers and sea turtles. If a whale chooses to come close to your boat, the Agoa sanctuary asks you not to seek interaction: stay on board, keep quiet, and never touch or feed the animal.

Good to knowSeeing whales from land needs no permission at all. The distance rules only apply on, under and above the water.

Where to See Whales from Land in St Barts

An adult humpback can stay underwater for around 30 minutes, so the ATE advises scanning the horizon for at least 40 minutes before giving up. Look for the blow, a column of spray that can reach about 3 metres, then watch for a raised tail fluke as the whale dives, a waving pectoral fin or, with luck, a full breach.

Toiny, on the wild southeast coast

The ATE’s humpback panel, with viewing telescopes funded by the Agoa sanctuary, was produced for Toiny, the rugged, undeveloped coastline on St Barts’ southeast side. It is also a beautiful place to walk: our guide to the Toiny Coast Trail hike along St Barts’ southeast shore explains the route. Bring water, sun protection and your own binoculars.

The heights of Gustavia

For its March 2025 land-based session, the ATE gathered whale watchers on the seaside promenade beside the hospital car park on the heights of Gustavia, and asked attendees to bring binoculars. It is a quick, easy viewpoint if you are already in town.

Your villa or hotel terrace

Any elevated spot with a wide, open sea view works on the same principle: height, patience and a good pair of binoculars. Early morning, when the sea is often calmer, makes blows easier to pick out.

Can You Book a Whale Watching Tour in St Barts?

Not in the way you can in many other whale destinations. Under Agoa rules, only professionals trained by the sanctuary and authorised may approach to 100 m, and the sanctuary’s regulation pages do not list any authorised operator based in St Barts. In March 2025, the ATE went further and told the public, through the Journal de Saint-Barth, that whale watching is strictly forbidden in St. Barthélemy’s waters, with heavy penalties for breaking the rules.

The practical takeaway: do not book a boat expecting to chase whales. Book a regular half-day or full-day sail, snorkel or sunset trip, and treat any distant blow as a bonus. If you do see a whale, a good captain will slow down and keep well clear. Our St Barts yacht charter guide to day trips and week charters covers how boat days work and what they cost. Before booking any trip advertised around whales, ask the operator directly whether it holds Agoa training and authorisation.

Whale Etiquette on a Boat Day

  • Keep 300 m away and never steer toward a whale or follow it.
  • Slow down near the coast and anywhere animals are reported (5 knots within 300 m of shore).
  • Stay out of the water if a whale approaches. No swimming, snorkeling or diving toward it.
  • No drones within 300 m of the animals.
  • Cut the noise: turn the music off and keep voices low.
  • Never touch or feed any marine mammal.

How to Report a Whale Sighting in St Barts

The ATE records every marine mammal sighting around the island and uses the data to reduce risks during nautical events. If you see a whale or a pod of dolphins, the agency asks you to call it on 05 90 27 88 18 (as listed in October 2026), or email it with the number of animals, the location (GPS position if at sea), and the date and time. For a stranded or distressed marine mammal, call the ATE emergency line on 06 90 31 70 73.

Humpback Whale Quick Facts

According to the ATE, adult humpbacks (Megaptera novaeangliae) measure 11 to 17.5 metres and weigh 25 to 35 tonnes. A calf is about 4 m long and 1 to 2 tonnes at birth, and can gain more than 50 kg a day on its mother’s rich milk. The black-and-white pattern under each tail is unique, which lets scientists identify individual whales much like a fingerprint.
