Why Most People Waste Their First Trip to St. Barts (And How to Actually Do It Right)

St. Barts is one of the most expensive destinations on earth. And most first-timers still manage to spend their money on entirely the wrong things. This is the guide the regulars wish existed before their first trip.

Mistake #1: Staying in the Wrong Place

The mistake
Booking a hotel because it’s familiar, when a villa would be better

About 70% of experienced St. Barts travelers stay in private villas. A villa gives you a private pool, complete privacy, a full kitchen (critical when restaurant prices average €120/person), and the feeling of living on the island rather than visiting it. For groups of 3 or more, villas are almost always better value than hotels.

The fix: Browse St. Barts villas by dates and group size on VRBO. If you prefer hotel service, compare all hotel options on Expedia.

Mistake #2: Not Renting a Car

The mistake
Assuming taxis will be available when you need them

There are roughly 30 taxis on the entire island. They are not always available. Without a car you cannot reach Gouverneur, Saline, Colombier (hike trailhead), or most of the island’s best beaches. Not renting a car is the single fastest way to have a mediocre St. Barts experience.

The fix: Book your rental car before you arrive — the island’s fleet is small and sells out during peak season weeks in advance.

Mistake #3: Missing the Best Beaches

The mistake
Spending all your time at Saint Jean because it’s closest

Saint Jean is great — but Gouverneur (the island’s most beautiful beach), Saline (wild and undeveloped), and Colombier (accessible only by boat or a 30-minute hike, with the best snorkeling on the island) are where people who know St. Barts spend their time. None of these are accessible without a car or boat.

The fix: Rent a car and spend at least one morning at Gouverneur, one at Saline, and book a day charter to Colombier — it’s worth every cent.

Mistake #4: Not Booking a Day on the Water

The mistake
Leaving without spending a full day on a boat

The single activity most regulars cite as the highlight of every trip is a day on a catamaran or private boat — sailing the island’s coastline, anchoring in hidden bays, snorkeling at Colombier, and watching the sun set from the deck with Gustavia harbor glowing in the distance. It is not expensive relative to everything else on the island, and most people who skip it regret it.

The fix: Book a boat charter or cruise for at least one day of your trip →

Mistake #5: Arriving Without a Plan

The mistake
Assuming you’ll figure it out when you get there

The best restaurants are booked out weeks in advance in high season. The best villas and hotel rooms are gone months out. The boat rental you wanted doesn’t have availability. The car rental is sold out. St. Barts rewards planning. Everything worth doing can be done — if you book ahead.

Your Pre-Trip Checklist

Book flights to Sint Maarten (SXM)
Reserve your hotel or villa
Book your rental car — do this immediately
Reserve a boat or cruise for at least one day
✓ Book inter-island flight SXM → SBH in advance
✓ Make restaurant reservations 2–3 weeks ahead

The Right Way to Do St. Barts

Stay in a villa with a pool. Rent a car. Spend your mornings at Gouverneur or Saline. Have one serious dinner in Gustavia. Dedicate a full day to the water. Eat lunch at a beach snack bar at least once. Don’t rush. The island is 21 square kilometers — you can see everything and still feel unhurried. That’s the whole point.
