Eden Rock St Barts: Full Review 2026 — Is It Still the Best Hotel?

Eden Rock is perhaps the most photographed hotel in the Caribbean — built on a dramatic volcanic rock above Saint Jean Beach, with suites carved into the cliff and a cultural identity that no other hotel on the island can match. Here is the full 2026 review.

What Eden Rock Is

Eden Rock was created by David and Kathy Matthews — he an art collector and adventurer, she a former model — who purchased an extraordinary volcanic rock above Saint Jean Beach in the 1990s and built a house on top of it. The house became a hotel. The hotel became a legend. The property now encompasses the original Rock house (now a suite) plus a collection of buildings on the cliff and beachside, 34 rooms and suites in total, all designed with an eclectic, art-filled aesthetic that is completely unlike any other hotel in the Caribbean.

Eden Rock was acquired by the LVMH group in recent years, which has brought investment and consistency while preserving the eccentric character that made it famous. It is now part of the same portfolio as Cheval Blanc — but feels nothing like it. Where Cheval Blanc is polished luxury, Eden Rock is creative, irreverent, and full of personality.

The Suites & Rooms

The standout accommodation is The Rock — the original house at the top of the cliff, with panoramic views of Saint Jean Bay. Staying here is genuinely one of the most extraordinary hotel room experiences in the Caribbean. Other suites are built into and around the cliff: some have private plunge pools on terraces over the rock face, others are at beach level with direct access to Saint Jean Beach. All are designed with art and objects collected by the owners — each room has a distinct character. Rates start at approximately €800/night for a basic room and rise to €6,000+/night for The Rock in peak season.

The Beach Bar

Eden Rock’s beach bar — at the base of the rock, directly on Saint Jean Beach — is the island’s best-positioned and most social daytime spot accessible to non-guests. Anyone can walk up and order a cocktail. The view up to the hotel on the rock above, the beach in front, and the Saint Jean Bay backdrop create a setting that works equally well for a quiet afternoon and a buzzy midday scene. This is where many visitors experience Eden Rock without staying there.

On the Rocks Restaurant

The main restaurant perched on the rock itself — arguably the most dramatically situated restaurant on the island. Reserve well ahead. The food is French-Caribbean, consistently excellent, and the experience of dining on a volcanic outcrop above the Caribbean is one you will describe to people who weren’t there for years afterward.

Is Eden Rock Still the Best Hotel?

It depends on what you mean by “best.” For design, character, and a truly unique experience — yes. There is nowhere else on St. Barts like it. For pure luxury service and spa — Cheval Blanc may edge it. For value versus a private villa — a villa still wins for most groups. Eden Rock occupies its own category: a hotel with a personality so specific that those who love it are unconditional about it and those who want pure, seamless luxury may prefer something else. Know which type you are before booking.
