The Golden Rule: Rent a Car

There is no public transport of any kind on St. Barts. No buses, no trams, no shared taxis, no Uber. The island has approximately 30 licensed taxis — a number that is structurally inadequate for the visitor volume even in off-season. Without a rental car, you are restricted to wherever you can walk. Book your rental car here the same day you confirm accommodation — do not wait.

Rental Car Practicalities

  • Pick up: Most agencies at Gustaf III Airport (SBH). Your car is waiting when you land.
  • Type: Small car or Mini Moke for couples; small SUV for groups or luggage. Automatic transmissions book out fast — reserve early.
  • Driving: Right side of the road (French territory). Roads are narrow, steep, with hairpin turns. Drive slowly on first day.
  • Cost: €70–€130/day depending on vehicle type and season.
  • Fuel: One petrol station near the airport. Fill when you can.
  • Parking: Limited in Gustavia at peak times. Arrive early for shopping or dinner days.

Taxis

Taxis exist but are not reliable for spontaneous movement. There is no app — you call a dispatcher, who calls a driver, who may or may not be available. In peak season, taxi availability is frequently limited. Taxis work best for: airport transfers (book ahead), specific one-way journeys where a rental car creates complexity, or late-night returns from Gustavia restaurants when driving feels inadvisable after a long dinner with wine. For everything else, the rental car is superior.

Taxi fares are regulated and posted — expect €15–€35 for most island journeys. Tip is appreciated but not compulsory.

Getting to St Barts from Sint Maarten

Inter-Island Flight (10 minutes)

Winair and St. Barth Commuter operate scheduled flights between SXM and SBH. The most popular option — 10 minutes in the air, dramatic approach, landing that people describe for years. Cost: €100–€300 return. Book your inter-island flights here.

Ferry (45–60 minutes)

Great Bay Express and Voyager catamarans run between Sint Maarten and Gustavia. No luggage restrictions — ideal if you’re over the flight weight limit. Cost: €60–€80 return. Can be rough in certain sea conditions.

Private Helicopter

Available from SXM. Approximately 8 minutes. Spectacular views. Cost: €400–€800 per person depending on route and operator. The most dramatic and memorable arrival on the island.

Charter Boat from Sint Maarten

A private charter from Sint Maarten to St. Barts (1.5–2.5 hours by sail or motorboat) is the most luxurious arrival. Arrive in Gustavia harbor by sea, watch the superyachts as you dock. Unforgettable start to a trip.

Getting Around the Island

The island is 21 square kilometres. Point to point — airport to Gouverneur, Gustavia to Grand Cul de Sac — is never more than 20 minutes in a car. There are no distances that require planning or rushing. The roads are the experience: twisting hillside drives with sea views that change with every turn.

Night Driving

Many St. Barts roads are poorly lit after dark. Drive slowly at night on unfamiliar routes — the hairpin turns that are manageable in daylight need more care after dark. Have your accommodation’s address and phone number ready before the final turn.
