Why a Boat Day Is Non-Negotiable

The perspective from the water changes everything. Seeing St. Barts’ volcanic hills from the sea — rounding the headland into Colombier Bay, anchoring in turquoise water with no other structure in sight, snorkeling over coral gardens with sea turtles — these are experiences that simply don’t exist from land. The island looks different, feels different, and reveals aspects of its character that only the sea shows you.

Long-term St. Barts visitors consistently cite their boat days as the highlight of every trip. Most wish they’d booked more of them. One day minimum is the recommendation. Two or three days if your schedule allows. Browse available charter options here.

Day Charter Options

Most Popular
Day Catamaran Charter

Cost: €600–€1,200/day (4–8 passengers) · Includes: Captain, crew, snorkeling gear, lunch, drinks. The classic St. Barts boat day. Departs Gustavia harbor around 9am, sails to Colombier for snorkeling, anchors in a second bay for lunch, returns to Gustavia for sunset. The sea turtle sightings at Colombier are the highlight for most passengers.

Private & Flexible
Private Motorboat Day Rental

Cost: €300–€800/day · With captain: No license needed. Self-skippered: License required. Best for small groups who want total freedom — anchor where you want, stay as long as you like, reach bays the catamarans don’t. Smaller craft than the catamarans, which means some exposed passages can be bouncier.

Romantic / Special Occasion
Sunset Sail

Cost: €400–€800 (2–4 hours, 2–6 passengers) · Shorter sunset charters are available from several operators. Depart around 4:30pm, sail along the coast, watch the sunset over the hills from the water, return to Gustavia in darkness. The most romantic option for couples. Champagne typically included or easily arranged.

Island Hopping
Multi-Day Sailing Charter

Cost: €800–€3,000+/day depending on boat size · Full-week charters allow you to explore the surrounding islands — Saba, Statia, St. Kitts, Anguilla, St. Martin. The Eastern Caribbean sailing circuit is one of the finest in the world, and St. Barts is an ideal base. Bareboat (self-sailed) or skippered options available.

Ultimate Experience
Superyacht Charter

Cost: €5,000–€100,000+/day · Full crew: captain, chef, first mate, steward. Water toys included. The most complete on-water experience available. Gustavia harbor’s superyacht infrastructure — fuel, provisions, concierge, parts — is among the best in the Caribbean. If this is in the budget, St. Barts is the right place for it.

The Best Charter Route

The standard day charter from Gustavia covers: Colombier Bay (snorkeling with turtles, only accessible by boat or hike), a second secluded anchorage for swimming and lunch, then a coastal cruise back along the island’s Atlantic cliffs before returning to Gustavia for sunset. This is roughly 6–7 hours on the water and is the definitive St. Barts boat day.

What to Bring on a Charter

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+ — the water reflection amplifies UV significantly)
  • A light layer for the return journey after sunset (surprisingly cool on the water)
  • Waterproof camera or phone case
  • Prescription medication for seasickness if you’re prone (the open sea passages can have swell)
  • Most operators provide snorkeling gear, towels, lunch, and drinks — confirm before departure
Book in Advance

Day charters in peak season (January–March) book out 1–3 weeks ahead. In shoulder season, 3–7 days notice is usually sufficient. Don’t leave it until arrival day — the best boats go first. Browse and book your St. Barts charter here →
