Colombier Beach St Barts: How to Get There 2026

Colombier is the most dramatic and beautiful beach on the island — and the hardest to reach. No road. No beach club. No easy access. Just a 30-minute hike or a boat ride, and one of the finest swimming and snorkeling spots in the Caribbean waiting at the end.

What Makes Colombier Special

Colombier Beach sits inside a deep, protected volcanic cove on the island’s northwest tip. It is entirely undeveloped — no restaurants, no beach chairs, no infrastructure of any kind except shade from sea grape trees along the beach’s edge. The water is extraordinarily clear, with coral gardens and consistent sea turtle sightings that make it the island’s finest snorkeling location. The surrounding cliffs are dramatic, the bay is sheltered from wind, and the scene — particularly before 11am when boats start arriving — is genuinely one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean.

How to Get to Colombier: Option 1 — By Boat (Recommended)

The most popular and comfortable way to reach Colombier is by a day charter from Gustavia harbor. Most catamaran and motorboat day charters include Colombier as their primary stop. The boat anchors in the bay, passengers swim or snorkel ashore or directly from the boat, and you have the beach for 1–2 hours before continuing to the next destination. Book your day charter here — most include Colombier by default.

This is the recommended approach for most visitors because it also includes lunch on the boat, snorkeling equipment, and experienced crew who know the best areas of the reef. The arrival by sea — rounding the headland and seeing the bay open up ahead — is one of those moments that defines the St. Barts experience.

How to Get to Colombier: Option 2 — The Hike

The hiking trail to Colombier begins at the car park above Petite Anse (Anse des Flamands area, northwest of the island). The trail takes approximately 25–35 minutes each way. It is a dry, exposed path with some rocky sections — wear proper shoes, not flip-flops. Bring plenty of water. The descent to the beach is steeper than it looks from the trailhead.

The hike is best attempted before 9am or after 4pm to avoid the heat of the day. You’ll need a rental car to reach the trailhead — it’s not accessible on foot from any accommodation.

Hike vs Boat: The Honest Comparison

The hike lets you arrive at Colombier before any boats — private, quiet, extraordinary. But you’re limited to what you carry, and the return hike in the heat of the day can be demanding. The boat gives you a full day experience with lunch, snorkeling gear, and crew — but you’re sharing the bay with other charter boats. Both are worth doing if you have time for both.

What to Expect at Colombier

  • Sea turtles: Green turtles are regularly sighted resting on the seagrass beds and swimming in the shallower areas of the bay — particularly in the morning
  • Snorkeling: Best along the rocks at both ends of the bay. Coral, fish, and turtle encounters are the highlights
  • Swimming: The bay is well-protected and generally calm. Safe for confident swimmers
  • Facilities: None. Bring everything you need
  • Crowds: By 11am in peak season, several charter boats anchor in the bay. Before 10am and after 3pm it is significantly quieter
