The Complete Guide to Every Shore

Shell Beach. Gouverneur. Colombier. St Barthélemy has fourteen named beaches and no bad ones — but they are not all equal. This is the honest, complete guide to every shore on the island.

Turquoise Caribbean beach with white sand and clear water in St. Barts
St Barthélemy’s beaches are protected by law from mass tourism — no vendors, no high-rises, no compromises.
Why St Barthélemy

Beaches That Actually Live Up to the Photographs

St Barthélemy has no high-rise hotels. No beach vendors walking the waterline. No all-inclusive resorts. By law and by culture, the island has protected its coastline from the commercialization that defines most Caribbean destinations. The result is a collection of beaches that feel genuinely private — even when they are not.

White sand, volcanic rock formations, and Caribbean and Atlantic water in shades of blue that look digitally enhanced but aren’t. Fourteen named beaches in 21 square kilometers. Here is every one of them.

Etiquette note: All beaches in St Barthélemy are public by French law. Bring reef-safe sunscreen only — conventional sunscreen harms the coral reef and is widely considered unacceptable on the island. Topless bathing is universal and unremarked upon.

The Beaches

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Shell Beach

3-minute walk from Gustavia Harbor · Caribbean side

The harbor beach — and the most underrated on the island. Named for its composition: instead of fine sand, the shore is covered in small white and ivory shells that crunch softly underfoot and glow in afternoon light. The water is calm, clear, and shallow. La Plage restaurant sits directly at the waterline, serving fresh St Barthélemy seafood and cocktails. Early morning — before 9am — the beach is almost entirely empty.

Best for Convenience, swimming, harbor access
Facilities La Plage restaurant, loungers
Crowds Moderate in peak season
Water Calm, Caribbean side
Romantic honeymoon couple walking on empty white sand Caribbean beach at sunrise
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Gouverneur Beach

South coast · 15 minutes from Gustavia

If you can only go to one beach in St Barthélemy, go to Gouverneur. A long crescent of fine white sand framed by dramatic hillsides that drop almost vertically to the water, with no buildings visible and a sea that runs from turquoise to deep blue in fifty meters. There are no facilities — no bar, no restaurant, no sun beds. You bring what you need, spread your towel, and experience the island as it was before tourism arrived. The lack of services is the luxury.

Best for Pure beauty, photography, solitude
Facilities None — bring everything
Crowds Surprisingly low
Water Calm, excellent swimming
Snorkeling in crystal clear turquoise Caribbean water with coral reef
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Colombier Beach

Only by foot or boat · 45-minute hike from Flamands

Colombier is not the easiest beach to reach. That is the point. There is no road — the only way in is a 45-minute hike along a rocky trail or by private boat from Gustavia Harbor. By the time the bay comes into view at the crest of the hill, the effort produces something close to disbelief: a pristine, shell-shaped bay of electric turquoise water. Snorkeling here is exceptional — sea turtles, rays, and tropical fish in concentrations rare for a beach this accessible.

Best for Snorkeling, adventure, seclusion
Access 45-min hike or boat charter from Gustavia
Wildlife Sea turtles, rays, tropical fish
Facilities None — water essential

Saint Jean Beach

Northeast coast · 10 minutes from Gustavia

St Barthélemy’s most social beach — a wide, gently curving bay split in the middle by Eden Rock. Flanked by Nikki Beach on the western end and a series of smaller beach clubs on the eastern stretch. The water is protected and shallow, ideal for paddleboarding and families. Gustaf III Airport sits directly above the western end — planes pass close enough on final approach that the beach doubles as a natural observation deck.

Best for Scene, watersports, Nikki Beach
Facilities Full beach clubs, restaurants
Crowds Busiest beach in peak season
Highlight Airport landings overhead
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Flamands Beach

Northwest coast · 10 minutes from Gustavia

What Saint Jean would be if it decided to stop trying so hard. The beach is wider, the sand finer, the crowd thinner. Cheval Blanc — one of the finest hotels on the island — sits directly on Flamands, which means the beach has world-class service infrastructure without the social performance of Nikki Beach. Northwest-facing: the best sunset beach in St Barthélemy.

Best for Quiet luxury, sunset watching
Facilities Cheval Blanc hotel, Bar’bord
Crowds Low to moderate
Orientation Northwest-facing — best sunsets
⭐⭐⭐⭐

Grand Cul de Sac

Northeast coast · 15 minutes from Gustavia

A protected lagoon with calm, shallow, warm water — the best beach on the island for kitesurfing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding. The reef at the lagoon entrance shelters the bay from Atlantic swells. Hotel Guanahani fronts the beach with full resort infrastructure: sun beds, water toys, and two excellent restaurants open to non-guests at lunch.

Best for Kitesurfing, families, reef snorkeling
Facilities Hotel Guanahani, full watersports
Water Protected lagoon, very calm
Snorkeling Best accessible reef on the island
